As a result of cable company buy-outs or mergers of local or national consequence, the franchisee (our cable company) has changed five times since 1986.

The most recent merger was of AT&T Broadband and Comcast. Technically, no cable television franchises were transferred as a result of the 2002 merger transaction. Branford (one of ten AT&T Broadband franchise areas in Connecticut) continued to be held by the franchisee via the merger. However the cable Company became Comcast, Inc.

COMCAST, Inc. @2002
AT&T Broadband @1996
TCI Cablevision of So. Central CT @1992
Heritage Communications, Inc. @1989
Rollins Cablevision of CT @1986
Community TV Systems @1975

The consolidation of media corporations is a topic of much debate. Anticipated consumer benefits identified in merger documents follow:

  • accelerate broadband deployment in areas such as telephony,
  • high-speed Internet service, video-on-demand,
  • other interactive television services,
  • as well as achieve substantial operating synergies that will serve the public interest.

Our history of cable consolidation can be traced in the Dept. of Public Utilities records which are made public via their Docket Web Site.
